Plus Two Commerce opens more doors than B.Com alone. The right choice depends on how soon you want to start working, where you want to work, and how many years you can give to study. Here is how the main options compare.
The short answer
- Want a job quickly? A practical accounting course such as MPA takes about two months.
- Want a global finance career? CMA (US) and Enrolled Agent can each be finished in about a year.
- Want a deep Indian qualification? CMA (India) takes three to three and a half years.
- Want a degree as well? Do B.Com alongside a professional course instead of choosing between them.
Course by course
MPA (Master in Professional Accounting)
ISLA's two-month, classroom course in the tools accounting offices use every day: Tally Prime, MS Excel, Zoho Books, GST, UAE VAT and income tax, with interview training. It suits students who want to start working in accounts while they study, and anyone planning to work in the Gulf. See the MPA course.
CMA (US)
The Certified Management Accountant credential from IMA in the United States. There are two exam parts, with three exam windows a year, and most students finish in 8 to 12 months. You can sit the exams while you are studying; the certificate itself needs a degree and two years of relevant work experience. It leads to management accounting and finance roles in multinational companies. CMA (US) details.
CMA (India)
The Cost and Management Accountant course from ICMAI. It has three levels and exams in June and December, and takes about 3 to 3.5 years. It is strong for cost accounting, manufacturing, and public sector and government roles. Plus Two students can begin with the early levels. CMA (India) details.
Enrolled Agent (EA)
A United States tax credential authorised by the IRS. There are three exam parts, and it usually takes 8 to 12 months. The IRS does not ask for a degree, so you can start early. It leads to US taxation roles in Big 4 firms, accounting firms and KPOs. Enrolled Agent details.
CIA (Certified Internal Auditor)
The internal audit qualification from the IIA, with three exam parts. It is meant for degree holders and final-year students, so for most Plus Two students it comes after or during B.Com or BBA. CIA details.
B.Com / M.Com
A degree keeps every later option open, including the CMA (US) certificate. ISLA supports the B.Com and M.Com distance programme of Pondicherry University, which you can study alongside a professional course. Degree details.
How to choose
- Decide where you want to work: Kerala, another Indian city, the Gulf, or for a US-facing firm.
- Decide how long you can study before you need an income.
- Pick one professional course and pair it with a degree, instead of collecting several half-finished courses.
